More than two dozen Olympic champions, mentors and further global sports figures have put their names to a statement demanding a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is facing execution in Iran.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising global condemnation over the nation's expanding employment of capital punishment as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased appeal censures the Iranian regime's ruling to confirm the death sentence of the boxing champion.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was detained for being involved in national uprisings in the year 2019 and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in incarceration, where he has been tortured and confined in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is intended to inspire optimism, togetherness, and fortitude,” the endorsers expressed. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these ideals and a caution to every athlete who attempts to express dissent.

Pattern of Executing Athletes

The statement pointed out that the athlete's situation was part of a pattern and emphasized Iran’s record of executing athletes for their beliefs, such as a football captain, captain of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, a wrestling champion, a young national competitor, faced the death penalty.

Other endorsers to the letter comprise a sailing champion, who skippered the first women's squad in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the former leader of the national squad a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Arrest and Unfair Trial

The athlete was detained in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His sentence has been reversed multiple times but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the latest review. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and bodies.

Appeal to UN

The urging to stop the boxer's death sentence comes after a previous letter to the UN high commissioner for rights, signed by more than a hundred advocates and entities, calling for measures to stop the athlete’s death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

As per reports, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has reached shocking dimensions”. In 2023, officials put to death at least over 850 people – a 48% increase on 2022. In the prior period, data showed 972 executions, representing the maximum count since 2015. More than hundreds of people have been executed so far in the current year.

Activists and opponents are focus, notably in the aftermath of the the year 2022 demonstrations. Specialists say the government have utilized the death penalty to suppress opposition, generate apprehension among the population and reinforce their hold on power.
