Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Slimming Medication

An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

After moments of entering one community, a vendor posted contact information, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Inside these groups, posts display black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious health risks”.
