The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
